Individual Therapy for Anxiety in Birmingham, Alabama

Do you replay events or conversations in your mind?

Are you unable to go and do the things you want?

Do you obsess over “What if…” scenarios?

Maybe you have trouble falling asleep because you cannot turn off your brain, or perhaps you feel overwhelmed or overly emotional and don’t know why. You may be canceling plans with family or friends or simply prefer to just be home alone. Perhaps you recognize your thoughts are irrational but don’t know what to do about them.

Whatever it is that you are experiencing, you are beginning to notice the impact of this in every facet of your life:

  • Irritable mood affecting relationships with family and friends

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Physical symptoms like headaches, muscle tension, nausea, teeth grinding

Anxiety Counseling Can Help

It may feel impossible now, but you can control your thoughts and improve overall levels of anxiety. You can sleep through the night. You can have fewer and less severe panic attacks.

Anxiety Counseling helps you do three things:

  • Learn coping skills for current symptoms, including when and how to use them

  • Become aware of anxious and unhelpful thoughts and learn ways to distract from or stop them

  • Work to challenging anxious thoughts with facts so you can manage symptoms and have less occurrences of anxiety and/or panic attacks.

I will help you through this process, tailoring each step to your unique needs and circumstances. My approach to anxiety counseling comes from a place of “re-training your brain” through the steps above and gaining insight on why you might be experiencing anxiety and identify any possible triggers. I believe we don’t have to believe everything we think and together we can regain your control over your thoughts.

You don’t have to live life feeling anxious and insecure,

and I can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Counseling for anxiety is very effective when clients are ready to make a change. This will mean confronting thoughts and symptoms you may have been avoiding.

While your counselor will be with you every step of the way, there will be work to be done outside of sessions. Clients will need to practice skills taught in sessions and may be asked to keep a record of occurrences of anxiety in order for counselor to gain better understanding and ultimately provide some relief.

  • Medications are not required in the treatment of anxiety. We will discuss many effective ways of coping with anxiety and managing anxiety symptoms during therapy. However if you or your counselor feels medications may be helpful, a referral to a psychiatrist can be discussed. Birmingham Counseling Solutions does not provide evaluations and is not a prescriber of medications.
